Descendants of
John Kemp and Louisa Dewson
1. John Kemp was
born in Oct 1817 in Downham, Norfolk.
Maunfactured the Kemp
Oven, invented by another family member.
States on George's birth
certificate that John's occupation at the time was a Bricklayer.
In 1861 the trade
directory lists John Kemp, Oven Builder at 28 St. John Street, where George was
born. The company was
begun in 1840, based on Kelly's Directory of the area listing in 1932
showing it 'established
over 92yrs'. In 1863 John Kemp is listed at 18-20 Sutton Street, East
Commercial Road, next
door to the Primitive Methodist Chapel, and the printers of the Primitive
Methodist's monthly
magazine. In 1871 John had an address at 127 Stepney Green E. From 1878
the firm was known as
'Kemp & Sons Oven Builders' and continued at the same address until 1972.
John died betwen
1864-1871
John Kemp was born 1817 in Downham Market, Norfolk. By trade he was a
brickmaker, as was
his father before him.
In 1840 he married Louisa Dewson and they left Norfolk for Stepney, London,
where John established
the oven-building business. John and Louisa had several children and the
sons continued the
business with their father. The eldest son (John Dewson Kemp c1842) married
Anne Lupton from South
Shields in 1864: family lore has it that she came from quite a well-to-do
family and invested
quite a sum of money in the business. In
fact, 126 Stepney Green was actually
renamed Lupton House.
John and Anne had three daughters but no sons, but another brother
Edward did, and he and
his sons continued in the business. One of them, who later emigrated to
Australia, did his
oven-building apprenticeship with W. Goodmans (in Stepney?). It is possible that
that at some point the
firm ran into financial difficulties and Edward’s nephew Stanley Kemp took
over the running of the
oven-building business until it finally folded in the 1960’s. The old Kemp
yard
was still there around
1968 as Ms Lloyds recalls visiting it as a child, but it has since been
demolished to make way
for flats. There is
mention of Kemp’s
oven-building business in Kelly’s Directory. Also the Post Office London
Directory
for 1874 makes mention
of it and names three locations in Stepney from where the business was
run. There is a Kemp
oven still in the wall outside the old bakery shop on Banham, Norfolk, and one
on display in the Rye
Museum. There is another being auctioned by a salvage company in Suffolk,
priced in excess of £5000.00.
John married Louisa
Dewson daughter of Daniel Dewson
and Jane Willson on 30 Aug 1840 in Parish of Christ Church, Middlesex.. Louisa
was born on 14 Sep 1821 in Lynn, Norfolk.
1881 Census has her
living at 3 Kemp Terrace with Emily (youngest daughter wrongly described as
her sister in census)
and a maid Martha Craig from Surrey.
John and Louisa had the
following children:
+
2 M

Second
Generation
2. John Dewson Kemp (John)
was born in 1842 in St. Georges East, London. He died on 28 Jun 1900.
He was a witness at his
brother George's wedding. He moved from Stepney Green, for the health of
his children, to
Parkfield, Grove Park. The house was set in two acres of garden, with pond,
where
garden parties were
held, and had views through to Crystal Palace. He died in 1900 of 'eczema and
psoriasis', according to
his death certificate.
The house was bombed
during the Second World War, and flats were built on the site.
John married Annie Lupton
in 1864. Annie was born in 1841
in South Shields, Durham.
They had the following
children:
+
12 F
i. Amelia Annie Kemp was
born in 1868. She died in 1961.
+
13 F
ii. Annie Evangeline Kemp was
born in 1871.
14 F
iii. Alice Elizabeth Kemp was
born in 1872 in St. Georges East, London. She died in 1959.
Alice married Ernest Mark Cottell in
1906.
5. Edward Kemp (John)
was born on 18 Apr 1848 in 28 John Street, Tower Hamlets. He died on 13 Jan
1906.
1881 Census has Edward
living at 3 Kemp Terrace with his wife Mary and three children, Mary L.
Kemp, John E. Kemp &
Robert J. Kemp.
1901 Census lists him as
an oven and furnace builder, living at 114 Stepney Green with his wife
Mary, Robert J, Edward
F, and Emily and Gladys V Kemp. Also it states Edward was 57 yrs old in
1901, which is either a
misprint or he was born in 1844.
Edward married Mary
Turner daughter of Frederick
Turner and Barbara Rugless on 14 Sep 1872 in Stepney Parish Church. Mary was
born on 18 Jun 1850 in Stepney, London. She died in May 1940.
It would seem that
theirs was a very happy marriage. After Edward's death, Mary went into mourning
and wore the full
widow's dress, veil etc. right up to her death in May 1940.
Sally Lloyds notes
"From what my grandmother told me, the Kemp brothers in the oven business
were all quite close and
had a 'gentlemen's agreement' that whichever brother died first, then the
surviving brother(s)
would look after their widow and children. John and William pre-deceased
Edward but I am not sure
when Robert died. My grandmother always said that her father never made
a will and that when he
died the widow of one of the brothers (we think Annie Lupton) would not
honour her late
husband's wishes and gave my gt. grandmother no part of the business. Research
has revealed that Edward
DID leave a will but the oven business was NOT mentioned - just the
house, a sum of money
and personal effects. I think my gt. grandmother had a falling out with her
sister-in-law,
upped-sticks and moved to Winchester and from what I can gather had little to do
with
her Kemp in-laws (a bit
like your gt.grandmother!). We think the move to Winchester was because
she had a brother,
Frederick Turner, who was the Master of the Methodist Orphanage just outside
Winchester, in the
village of Alresford, so she had some links with the area. Possibly with the
money
she was left by Edward
she bought her son, Edward (Ted) a newsagent's business in Winchester
High Street. Ted later
sold this, emigrated to Canada and became a minister and later served in
WW1 as a Red Cross
ambulanceman. There is a photo of the shop in a book on the pictorial history
of Winchester."
"My grandmother was
only 14 when her father died. She was very close to him as I think all his
children were. He
certainly sounded a very kindly man. Family lore has it that he was to be the
next
mayor of Stepney but I
don't know how true this is, although from a couple of obituaries John has
sent me most of the Kemp
brothers served as councillors or aldermen, so it may be true I don't have
a copy of Edward's
obituary assuming that there was one in a newspaper from the time."
Edward and Mary had the
following children:
15 F
i. Mary Louisa Kemp was
born on 22 Sep 1873 in Stepney, London.
16 M
ii. John Edward Kemp was
born on 26 Jun 1875. He died in 1953.
Jailed in 1908 for six
months regarding bankrupcy. His sister remained convinced
that he was totally
innocent!! She makes mention of it in her diaries. She said that
it was shortly after
this that he emigrated to Australia to 'save the family name.' A
lot of the Kemp brothers
held some sort of public office in the Mile End area, so
were probably not too
happy about John's indiscretions!
17 F
iii. Lillian Beatrice Kemp was
born on 17 Feb 1878. She died on 21 Jan 1880.
18 M
iv. Robert J Kemp was
born on 16 Dec 1879 in Stepney, London. He died on 31 Mar 1960.

7. William Austin Kemp (John)
was born in 1851 in St. Georges East, London.
According to the 1881
Census, William and Eliza lived at 1 Kemp Terrace, and they had a 16 yr old
maid called Emma Denham.
In the 1901 Census: 112
Stepney Green, London. Occupation: Oven Builder. Widower. His wife
Eliza must have died
before 1901 but after / whilst giving birth to Albert in 1891. There is no
mention
of Albert either, so he
may have died young, as he would only have been 10 yrs old at that time.
William married Eliza Amy
Clark . Eliza was born in 1851 in Bethnal Green.
They had the following
children:
26 F
i. Florence E Kemp was
born in 1877 in Stepney, London.

vi. Albert Kemp was
born in 1891 in Stepney, London.
No sign of him on the
1901 Census. Possibly died along with his Mother in child
birth.
8. Reverend George Kemp (John)
was born on 30 Jul 1853 in Stepney Green, London. He died on 25 Jun 1890 in
London. The cause of death was
Tuberculosis.
His Father's foundry was
next door to a Primitive Methodist Chapel on Sutton Street, Stepney Green,
where he went to Sunday
School. He became a Christian at an early age, and in his teens gave up
his job in the Family
business, an became a dissenting minister in the Primitive Methodist Church at
the age of 22yrs,
despite the disapproval of his Family.
His was appointed to the
Bury St. Edmunds circuit in 1875, where he stayed for three years. From
there he went to Forcett
St. Peter, a village near Wymondham. A year later he married Emma Upton,
twin daughter of a
farmer, Stephen Upton of Durham Farm, Burnt Ash, Lee, Kent on the 23rd Aug
1879 in the Wesleyan
Church in the district of Lewisham. Following the marriage they moved to a
house in Sand Street,
Soham, a village near to Ely, for five years. They had a maid called Adelaide
King. Here their first
two children were born, George in 1880 and Frances in 1882. He then moved to
Cambridge Second where
he remained for six years and where his other four children were born at
two yearly intervals.
George had been ill for
15 months as a result of contracting TB following a chill caught while
canvassing for his local
Liberal MP George Newnes, who paid for him to go to Switzerland hoping for
a cure, but this did not
happen, and he died in London aged only 36yrs. My Grandfather Stephen
was born on 15th June
1890, ten days before George's death. My Great Grandmother went to live in
Bromley with her six
children, presumably to be near her Father's farm, which was within walking
distance across the
fields. She refused help from her in-laws due to the fact that they had
disapproved of her
husbands calling to the church.

Twin daughter of a
farmer, married at 21yrs. After her husband's death she went to live in Crescent
Road, Bromley with her
six children, presumably to be near her Parent's farm which was within
walking distance across
fields, at Grove Park. It is thought she refused help from her in-laws in view
of the fact that they
had disapproved of her husband's calling, but was helped by George Newnes.
Her twin sister married
a Mr. Wood.
